今天是考研写作的第二期，我们从考研真题中采摘一些可以运用在作文中的表达，为自己的作文增光添彩。本次挑选出的三个表达来源于 2021 年英一的第一篇和第二篇阅读。

01

on the grounds that...

Successive governments have permitted such increases on the grounds that the cost of investing in and running the rail network should be borne by those who use it, rather than the general taxpayer.

译文：车票提价得到了历届政府的准许，理由是投资和运营铁路网的成本理应由其使用者而非全体纳税人承担。

复习隧道： give grounds for sth

大家还记得 grounds 和 ground 的区别吗？我们之前在 有讲过哦。当我们在 ground 后面加上了 s，常用来表示 a good reason for doing, believing, or saying something「充分的理由，根据」。所以 give grounds for sth 意思是「提供了做某事的理由」。

• A look at the data gives grounds for cautious optimism—for now, at least.

• 看看数据让我们有理由保持谨慎乐观——至少目前是这样。

on the grounds that…

认出了 grounds，那么今天的这个新词组也迎刃而解了——基于某种理由，即「理由是……」。所以呢？所以我们可以用这个词组替换 because, since 等等。用够了它们的你现在是不是有新思路了？

• The case was dismissed on the grounds that there was not enough evidence.

• 此案因缺乏足够的证据被驳回。

▍动笔写

这个词组可以用来传递因果关系，所以可用范围非常广。以「合作」为例造个句。其中，put together 指的是「齐心协力」，既可以单独使用，也可以和名词或名词词组搭配使用。

• Cooperation is important in workplace on the grounds that people can pull together their skills and creativity, which allows them to have a higher chance of being successful.

• 工作中的合作之所以重要，原因在于人们可以各施所长，集中发挥创造力，从而更有可能获得成功。

There is a strong case that…

However, there is a strong case that those who have been worst affected by industrial action should receive compensation for the disruption they have suffered.

译文：但受劳工行动影响最严重的人们完全有理由就交通混乱索偿。

case 是个五星名词，词义巨丰富，而且常构成短语、句型，使用频率很高，非常重要。比如，大家熟悉的 in case 「万一，如果」，in this case「在这种情况下」。

而在本句中，case 的含义却是 a set of reasons why something should happen or be done「理由，论据」。所以 a strong case 指的是「充分的理由」，整个句型的意思则是「有充足的理由要做某事」，我们可以拿它来替换常用的 It’s reasonable for us to do sth，或者 There are good reasons for us to do sth。除了 There is a strong case that… 之外，我们还可以把 that 从句换成 for sb doing sth。来看词典给出的例句，结合例句，大家更容易理解。

• There is a strong case for getting parents more involved in the school's activities.

• 有充分的理由要让家长更多地参与学校的活动。

2016 年 6 月的六级听力真题中也出现过 a strong case。不过在这里我们译为「充分的理由」不太合适。有充分的理由实行第二轮经济刺激说明什么呢？说明经济刺激是非常有必要的，而且后面出现了 not be necessary，前者有必要，但后者不希望成为必要。通过这样的改造，我们就可以翻译成前后对应、意义相反的句子，读起来更加顺口。

• If the economy starts to shrink again, Baily says it would make a strong case for a second stimulus—something the Obama administration hopes will not be necessary.

• 如果经济开始再次萎缩，贝利表示，第二轮经济刺激将会很有必要。而奥巴马政府却不希望经济刺激成为必要。

▍动笔写

如果你想写一篇「能源短缺」的文章，我们可以这样发表议论，其中 raise alarm over sth 是指「敲响某事的警钟」，这也是一个写作中很好用的表达。

• There is strong case for the authorities to raise alarm over power crunch, which will add to economic woes.

• 政府非常有必要敲响电力短缺的警钟，因为电力紧缺会加剧经济困境。

regardless of

And regardless of transferability, the study shows that what’s good for people may also be good for the environment.

译文：不管研究结果共通与否，这项研究表明对人们有益之事也可能对环境有益。

regardless 这个名词通常不单独出现，而是构成词组。最常用的词组是 regardless of sth，用来表示 sth is not affected or influenced at all by that other thing「不管，不论」。同学们对这个词组应该比较熟悉……吧？但是几乎没见过大家把它用在写作中，尽管它在外刊中出现频率很高。「法律规定人人平等，不分种族、宗教或性别」这句话我们耳熟能详，那怎样用英文表达呢？

• The law requires equal treatment for all, regardless of race, religion, or sex.

• 法律规定人人平等，不分种族、宗教或性别。

前不久《经济学人》写了一篇有关我们基建的文章，其中有这样一句：

• On this view, what matters is the amount of infrastructure per person, regardless of their income.

• 从这一点来看，重要的是人均基础设施的数量，不论其收入水平如何。
  

▍动笔写

regardless of 可用的范围也非常之广，以「坚持」这个话题为例，我们可以造出一个基本适合所有个人品质类话题的句子：

• We should persist in pursuing our dreams regardless of the difficulties we face.

• 不管面临何种困难，我们都必须坚持追逐自己的梦想。
